The FIFA World Cup South American Qualifiers form a group in 10 countries that are members of the South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL), and use the home and away system. Over the three years from September 2023 to September 2025, national teams from each country will be playing 18 matches, including nine home matches and nine away matches, aiming to compete in the tournament.
As the number of participating countries has increased to “48” since the 2026 World Cup, CONMEBOL's participation slots have also increased from “4.5” to “6.5”. The top six teams in the South American qualifying round will be in straight into the tournament, while the seventh place team will be in the FIFA Playoff Tournament. Ecuador was given a penalty in the previous tournament qualifying round, and the team started with three points deducted.
