Wakabayashi was born in Hyogo Prefecture on August 29th, 1907 (Meiji 40). After graduating from Kobe Ichi Junior High School, he went on to the former Matsuyama High School. At the same high school, he won the A-style soccer championship competition, the predecessor of the Emperor's Cup. He was active as captain at Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo). While he was in university, he was selected for the Japanese national team, and scored four goals in the match against the Philippines on May 25th, 1930, when he made his national team debut. He was said to be a genius by those around him, but seven years later, in August 1937 (Showa 12), he died of illness at the young age of 29.
